New Year Special - The results for Newsnet Scotland’s Greatest Album are in and here it is; we'll singalong with the proclaimers and the crowds to Auld Lang Syne.

Newsnet Scotland’s Greatest Album
Being a compilation album, we can put 80 minutes of songs onto a single CD in the 21st century and may thus comfortably more fully indulge our choices – however 20 songs is probably about right.

Many suggestions poured in and every suggestion was listened to and seriously considered – producing an infinitely bold and truly magnificent album that shines and lifts the listener up.  All the songs are world class and it’s impossible really to choose, but choose we must and each week in the new year we’ll try to play one or two… so!!

Popular music received a masterpiece from Midge Ure singing with Ultravox and that’s the chosen NUMBER 1 slot – the others in the top ten are timeless, international hits and simply explode with originality and talent.

The first set of ten songs: giants in recorded music---drrrrruuuum rrrroooooOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL

[Number 1] Ultravox – ‘Vienna’ , [Number 2] Simple Minds – ‘Belfast Child’, [Number 3] John Martyn – ‘May You Never‘,  [Number 4] Frightened Rabbit – ‘Swim Until You Can’t See Land’, [Number 5] The Eurythmics –  ‘Here Comes the Rain Again’, [Number 6] Gerry Rafferty – ‘Baker Street’, [Number 7] The Silencers – ‘The Painted Moon’ [Number 8] The Proclaimers – ‘I’m Goanna be (500 miles), [Number 9] Deacon Blue – ‘Dignity’ [Number 10] The Waterboys – ‘The Whole of the moon’

Can't beat the Corries singing 'A Man's a Man'. It has the perfect words by Burns and two of Scotland's finest and most versatile musicians. This is my number one.

Check out Paulo Natini's version, of " a man's a man" also on youtube, great audience reaction, some joining in with gusto, others stunned in amazement.

I have to agree Tam, Paulo version is just brilliant.....and he sings every word just as Burns wrote it.

I am a huge Corries fan btw !!

Burns called it "Is There For Honest Poverty", written near the end of his life. The words are insperational, amazing, utterly astonishing.

This must surely be the national anthem of an Independent Scotland.

ps. Frankie Millar's version of Caledonia must be high on anyones list. So should Amy MacDonald's Road To Home. (Well that's what I think anyway.)

There's going to be a NewsnetScotland 's Greatest Scottish Music Album at some point in the New Year.

My number one would be The Corries singing The Dawning of the Day......stirring stuff!

Ah you cannot ever go past The Proclaimers singing Auld Lang Syne.
Actually The Proclaimers singing anything is tops in my books. Two of Scotland's finest who have done more for our self image than most.
Happy New Year to all.

Frightened Rabbit? Giants of Scottish Music? Come on! I had to google them for goodness sake. And no Runrig...

Quoting Jester:
And no Runrig...

Thank goodness! I can never forgive them for anglicising Loch Lomond. :(

# Tocasaid 2011-12-31 14:12
Eh?! I didn't know that Loch Lomond was a Gaelic song to start with. Didn't Runrig add the 'S tu mo leannan bhoidheach' to the end of it?

# Holebender 2011-12-31 16:55
No, it wasn't Gaelic, but it wasn't English either. Runrig sing it in English with lines like "you'll take the high road and I'll take the low road" or "where me and my true love were ever wont to go", etc.

# richardcain2 2011-12-31 22:53
It was Scots.

# Tocasaid 2011-12-31 23:55
Aye, maybe but the original quote said it was 'Anglicised'. As 'Scots' was the tongue of the Anglo-Saxons and originally called 'Inglis' then we're talking about shades of grey in terms of how 'Anglo' the song was. Indeed, it could be argued that by adding Gaelic/Scottish to the song, Runrig actually 'Scoticised' it.

# Mad Jock McMad 2011-12-31 13:44
There is always the option for a Scots Traditional Album as well - plenty space for Runrig, Capercaille,Cor ries and all...

# Tocasaid 2011-12-31 14:15
Surely there must be some room on it for some Gaelic punk rock?! Radical Celtic music for the masses?!

Or at least a couple of Runrig classics from their days as a Celtic Black Sabbath:

'Tir an Airm' would do nicely though Fichead Bliadhna and Fuaim a' Bhlair are also very apt.

Scotlands Greatest Album, I dont think so.

# bramley 2012-01-02 19:59
there's some terrible songs in there.

Middle of the Road.........Cocteau Twins?.

This is every bit as bad as STVs effort.

Where were AC/DC, Nazareth, Frankie Miller, SAHB, Jethro Tull, Jack Bruce, Big Country, Donovan, Talking Heads, Idlewild, Average White Band, biffy Clyro, Garbage, Eddie Reader, K.T.Tunstall, Gallagher & Lyle, Mark Knopfler.

And that's just off the top of my head, i'm sure there will be a lot more worthier candidates.
