Might be able to sort out a question that has been bothering me for years. How do you spell "oos"? You know, the stuff you get in your belly button or under the couch Or is it "ous" or "oose"? And what's its derivation?
The word "oo", meaning wool is often described as being unique to the Shetland dialect. I do not believe this to be true. My father and his siblings (from mid-Perthshire) used the word in general conversation.
"Serk" wis the word oo yaised in Fisherraw as laddies. "Sark", that oo got fae Tam o Shanter, wis aye taen as a mair "polite" kinna Scots in thae days.
A wummin looking at a new cardigan at a sale of work. Oo? aye oo, aa oo? aye aa oo, aa ae oo? aye aa ae oo, ah'll tak it! Oose ah aye spellt oose. Huntin yer sark = looking for fleas!
