Labour's Shadow Defence spokesman Jim Murphy MP has warned the party it must get rid of 'shallow populism' and stop opposing all the Coalition's cuts.

Mr Murphy said the answer was to publicly state that many of the Coalition’s cuts are justified and even suggested £5bn of defence spending cuts that he said would show Labour is credible on the economy.

Many in Labour are worried about polls showing voters don’t see the party as being credible on both the economy and dealing with the deficit.

Mr Murphy, said the party needed to demonstrate "genuine credibility" on spending by outlining where savings would be made.

He said: "It is important to be both credible and popular when it comes to defence investment and the economics of defence.

"It is difficult to sustain popularity without genuine credibility – credibility is the bridge away from populism and towards popularity."

Mr Murphy, outlined how he would make £5bn of defence cuts saying he would make £5bn of cuts by accepting the scrapping of the Nimrod MR4 surveillance aircraft.  Mr Murphy also foresees reducing tank regiments and selling off some defence property as well as making efficiencies in the Trident renewal programme and scrapping the VC-10 transporter aircraft and the C-130J Hercules transporter.

Other plans include accepting the Tory-Lib Dem Coalition’s cuts to civilian allowances and targeting welfare for servicemen earning less than £20,000.

Mr Murphy added: "The truth is the Labour party would have to make cuts if we were in power" – but he said he would not accept all the Government’s defence cuts.

"Jim Murphy MP has warned the party it must get rid of 'shallow populism'"

I can assure Jim that the Labour party has achieved this objective!

Does the leader of the whole 'Scottish Labour Party' (yes I know) agree with this ?
Did she know that Mr Murphy was about to release this statement ?
Will she discipline him if he has released this statement without her approval. ?

can you ask her NNS ?

Why wouldn't the British Labour & Unionist Party "embrace spending cuts"? They proposed them.

# J Wil 2012-01-08 01:18
Underwrote them even.

""It is difficult to sustain popularity without genuine credibility – credibility is the bridge away from populism and towards popularity."

Powerful stuff from a no mark who has never had a proper job in his life far less a degree.

Populism - "political ideas and activities that are intended to represent ordinary people's needs and wishes"

What is so bad about that?

Popularity is what Labour seek - for that is what they need to get elected. For that people must once again conned into believing in their wisdom and wonderfulness (credibility) to make decisions based on what they and their buddies the Fabians think is best for us (while ensuring we pay them well for it). Statism I guess.

Murphy probably has some old Marxist pamphlets left over from his student politics days full of guff about how people like him can lead us to the the bright red dawn. Labourites - I detest them.

I thought all the talent in the Labour Party was in London.

# clootie 2012-01-08 09:53
"talent" in this case being a relative concept.

Although most in Labour do have their relatives employed by the party in Glasgow!

Labour are desperate. Looking to embrace any policy that will bring them support in the polls - that is the key aim for them, to be in power, at any cost.
Changing policies, internal disarray, outlandish claims based on false evidence, corruption at council level, secret ballots for leadership, verbal abuse - this is what the Labour party stand for and have clearly demonstrated all of these traits in the last month.

A master at stating the obvious, our Jim.
How come labour never state specific
plans or programmes, just general fuzzy notions about what they might do.

Mmm, I'd like to hear him say; "I may be of thum athithtanth if there ith a thudden crithith."

If he did, it would more than likely be false so there probably isn't much point; but it would be a laugh.

Jim says,"we won't sit at the same table as the Tories".
BUT
Johanne says, We will use the same menu as D. Cameron".

One order of crow to go, waiter.

I think this is intriguing..Skeletor distancing himself from the Referendum stooshie and trying to appeal directly to Middle England....thought he'd have been drafted in to prop up Joanne Lamentable! Maybe using his rodent like intelligence he's decided his future's elsewhere!

Poor Murphy. Dramatically stated.. he "would not sit at the same table as the tories" and then his boss invites D. Cameron and Co. to join his dinner party.
Maybe he could just order a take away ?
