A leading charity that promotes the interests of, and represents, older people in Scotland has given the thumbs-up for the referendum on the country’s constitutional future.

Age Scotland today (Wednesday) outlined their support for the referendum on their website:

“The consultation document recently published by the Scottish government is a chance for everyone to influence this referendum on our country’s constitutional future. We should see it as an opportunity to shape the future, not as a threat.”

The support was welcomed by Clare Adamson, SNP MSP for Central Scotland and member of the Scottish Parliament Equal Opportunity committee.

She said:

“I warmly welcome Age Scotland’s affirmative contribution to the debate on the referendum on independence. The referendum in 2014 is the biggest collective decision that the people of Scotland will ever have to make and it is essential that organisations and people from all walks of life in Scotland’s society are fully involved.

“The positive case for independence will be made by the Yes campaign, which the SNP fully supports and which we believe the people of Scotland will vote for.

“It is high time the anti-independence parties adopted a worthwhile role in this crucial discussion instead of their constant negativity.”

As someone who is approaching (at breakneck speed!)a certain age; I welcome that Age Concern have taken this stance.

They are to be commended for their pragmatic approach in the face of the negativity that is almost tangible from the Unionist parties.

An excerpt of a letter from British ambassador to the UN, Sir Mark Lyall Grant, to the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, and seen exclusively by The Independent. "There can and will be no negotiation on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands unless and until such time as the Falkland Islanders so wish," Sir Mark insists. "The United Kingdom and the Republic of Argentina cannot negotiate away the right to self-determination. It is a principle that we are both legally bound to respect."

As a disabled OAP I can only endose the Age Scotland's faith in the SNP. After all we Scottish OAPs could find ourselves returning to the Westminster parliament that is at present hell bent upon demonising pensioners, sick, disabled, unemployed and just plain poor people as scroungers, layabouts or worse. The SNP led Scottish Government has been streets ahead in looking after all Scotland's people in a fair and equiable manner. More power to their elbow can only be given by independence to run Scotland for Scotland instead of feeding the hungry maw of the ever hungry, Wastemonster treasury.
