A tornado was spotted over Glasgow yesterday by keen eyed sky watchers.  The twister appeared at around tea-time on Saturday as a thunderstorm moved over Scotland’s central belt.

The tornado appeared at the back of a large storm cloud and witnesses described it as “an incredible sight”.

Speaking to Newsnet Scotland, one Airdrie resident described sitting in calm warm sunshine one minute when suddenly the skies darkened and the noise of thunder drew their attention.

“We looked up and this amazing sight grabbed us.  It was like a huge tail had sprouted out from the cloud and disappeared behind houses on the horizon.” said the resident.

“At first we didn’t believe it was a tornado, then just as soon as it appeared it began to dissipate and we could clearly see the clouds turning as it did so.  It was incredible.”

Seen one on Skye while driving to my Sister in laws who stayed in Dunvegan , also seen water spouts which are like tornadoes but made from water while trawling round the east coast lovely to see from a distance

It doesn't appear to touch the ground so technically it wasn't a tornado - it was a simple funnel cloud.

Go on. Admit it. You were hoping to see Ian Davidson picked up by the wind and carried off to Oz.

Very low risk of that given he is seldom in Glasgow

I saw a similar funnel cloud formation near Annan yesterday at about 1.45pm. Also associated with a thunderstorm with the most torrential rain I have ever encountered outside the tropics. Tried to get a video of it but the thunder clouds obscured it before I could start filming. i'm not sure if it reached the ground but it certainly wasn't far off it.

Saw a funnel cloud similair to this one over Loch Fyne a few years ago. Slightly unsettling as we were on the small ferry crossing from Tarbert to portavadie. Also saw a water spout in the same area when I was younger.
