SNP Councillor Billy McAllister has called for an investigation into decisions taken by the former leader of Glasgow City Council Steven Purcell.  The News of the World reported that two SCDEA officers demanded to speak to Mr Purcell last year after he was identified during surveillance of a suspected drug dealer; the Labour politician is then said to have confessed to colleagues that he had used cocaine.

Mr McAllister, a long time campaigner against organised crime in Glasgow, wants an investigation into why Mr Purcell’s Labour group repeatedly refused calls to investigate the extent and reach of organised crime in Glasgow.

Mr McAllister alleges that a senior councillor blocked attempts by Glasgow’s director of culture and leisure Bridget McConnell, wife of former First Minister Jack McConnell, to close the taxpayer-funded Chirnsyde Community centre in Milton, Glasgow after it was linked to organised crime.

In 2006 Strathclyde Police bosses were said to have been amazed at the council’s decision to continue to bankroll the centre despite a report listing 32 concerns.

Another report produced in May 2006 by Scott-Moncrieff auditors, who were asked to investigate the governance and financial stewardship of Chirnsyde Community Initiative, stated that some of the Initiative’s financial arrangements fell short of acceptable standards.

It found vehicles belonging to Chirnsyde Community Initiative had been registered in the names of a well known local gangster and that the centre’s committee had been managing the initiative in breach of the Conditions of Grant.

In his letter to Glasgow City Council chief executive George Black, Mr McAllister says:

“Given both recent revelations and developments circulating in the local and national media, note that I wish to call upon your office to instigate a full investigation and/or a public inquiry regarding recent decisions reached under the auspices of former council leader Steven Purcell.

“As you can understand, I am concerned that council decisions were made whilst Mr Purcell was allegedly under the influence of chemical substances.”

The call comes as reports in The Times allege that a senior businessman and prominent Labour party donor may have benefited financially from a series of decisions involving Purcell.

Looks like the stench of corruption is eventually starting to emanate out to the masses. The biggest surprise here is how they have managed hide the endemic corruption of the decades old single party rule for so long. Of course the mainstream Scottish media has been almost universally compliant in aiding and abetting this parcel of rogues, but why ? I think there are at least two primary factors here. Firstly back handers in the form of favours in the forms of lots of dosh for council advertising revenue, but fortunately the SNP is intent in cutting this one off. Secondly, the 'Scottish' Labour Party (aka Scotland branch of London Labour) is seen as the last bastion and saviour of this rotten Union. Once they finally implode and are exposed for the crooks and sycophants they are, there will be nobody significant left trying to prop up this decaying 'union', which incidentally they are only doing to maintain their own corrupt power.

you may as well find a brick wall tarquir and keep banging your head on it.
the north british section of the labour party will be around in most of scotland for some time to come, and we will have the scottish media to thank.
i fear that as long as we have the likes of the bbc, daily record, scotsman ,in fact the majority of media outlets,we will never see change.
i also fear that after the GE we will see that the people of glasgow and most of the west of scotland will vote for a labour candidate.

Fair point, the demise of the the North British Labourites is taking much longer than makes any sense. How the people of Glasgow can continue to be taken in by them is beyond me. I think there is real potential though for a schism here when real socialists grow a spine and try to retake control of their own party. I think they have largely been waiting in the sidelines to hang on the breadcrumbs of power from having their Tory-lite party in power whilst they allow their socialist principles to be trampled underfoot. They must be utterly livid with what has happen to their party. Eventually it should dawn on them if it is not crystal clear already that England will never vote for their Socialist nirvana, and the only realistic chance they have is to sell their vision to the people of an independent Scotland, who incidentally might not buy that vision either but at least they have a chance. If they truly believe in socialism the SSP, Solidarity and Socialist Labour should combine forces.

I have to disagree about these "socialist" Labour people you say are waiting in the wings; Labour has been a byword for self-serving corruption for decades not just since the New Labour project got underway. There may be socialist Labour voters but I don't believe there are any socialist Labour members.

Many thanx for that CH.
It`s becoming clear why those much closer to Glasgow than I have been saying this is bigger than anything that`s ever been unearthed on West of Scotland Labour.
Will the MSM remember where their loyalties should lie, or will they revert to type and hush this all up ?
